Freezing in Boston/Business as Missions

Yeah, the cold weather finally hit today. We've retreated indoors to study (Spencer preparing for World Mission of the Church test tomorrow a.m.). It was 17 degrees when we took our ten minute walk from parking into church, and the wind was steady at 30 mph - I don't know what that wind chill is, but it was really cold. I can't remember the last time that wind felt painful because of the cold.

We had some great conversations today with folks about business as missions. We had a long talk with a couple from Singapore that we have gotten to know. He is finishing his PhD work in EE at MIT, and she did a Master's in Design at Harvard - they are sharp, to say the least. They went to the Urbana business as missions track this past december, so it was fun talking with them about ideas and possibilities (great commission companies with a triple bottom line, ideas for serving the poor, etc.). We also talked to another guy, who is going to put us in touch with one of the Harvard doctoral candidates, who is doing his dissertation on spiritual transformation of culture that energizes business. Likewise, another lady told us much about her story of building a business within the medical industry and focusing on creating a kingdom business environment. All the contacts were pretty exciting.

We get more excited about the possibilities of living, working, and doing ministry in the context of a cross-cultural community that has a kingdom business orientation. That still may be years out, but we're praying toward that end.

I've (Spencer) been playing some racquetball - a humbling pursuit. I've been getting waylaid on the court, but maybe I will improve in time.
